Women in the digital and technology industry shed light on creating, capturing, and delivering value by going digital in the Women’s Business and Leadership Summit 2019. This year, the focus of the summit was ACT — Accelerate. Create. Transform — in a digital world.
Myla Villanueva, MDI Group Chairman and Novare Technologies CEO, shared the limelight with executives from major tech companies like Google and Microsoft and from leading consumer brands like PLDT, UnionBank, Security Bank, and Lalamove.
Joining the panel discussion entitled “Bridging Generations, Building Legacies Through Digital”, Myla stressed that companies should be willing to adopt new technologies. “Openness is very important,” she said.
In the same panel, Ana Aboitiz-Delgado, Head for Consumer Finance of UnionBank of the Philippines, shared how Unionbank had taken on digital transformation three years ago, “We realized (from customer feedback) that nobody likes to be in the physical branch.”
“When Unionbank decided to adapt transformation, the first thing it considered was actually not the technology, but people — customers,” she explained further.
Aboitiz-Delgado was referring to “The Ark”, a UnionBank concept branch that utilizes technologies like augmented reality, touch screens, and artificial intelligence to deliver the bank’s services. It was a milestone project completed . The UnionBank executive once described the project as “a bridge between the real-world banking experience and the digital experience”.
The example of “The Ark” validates a central thread in the panel discussion: going digital may require investment in time and money, but not doing so may be more costly.
Ambe Tierro, Senior Managing Director of Advanced Technology Centers in the Philippines, recalled what happened to Nokia and Kodak when the companies were not innovating enough or were thinking that customers would always want their pictures printed.
Further, she emphasized, “So the question (for companies) should be: What’s the cost of not going digital?”
Women@Work: ACT in a Digital World was held at Dusit Thani Manila on August 30, 2019.
